"The University of
Washington Fined for Releasing CFCs"
The University of Washington was slapped
yesterday with more than $135,000 in fines and forced
investments in environmental projects for violations
related to the release of ozone-depleting
chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs. The Environmental
Protection Agency fined the UW $29,975 in penalties and
ordered it to spend at least $105,794 on environmental
projects that include educating other four-year schools
about ozone harming compounds and installing a new
filter system to reduce air pollution. The agency said
the UW failed to repair a leak in one of its campus
refrigeration systems and kept inadequate records of
work done on other systems, which violates CFCs
regulations.
