A2L Refrigerant Transition Resource Guide
Welcome to our A2L Refrigerant Transition Resource Guide. Here, we'll keep you informed on the latest information regarding the transition to A2L refrigerants.
Manufacturers will no longer produce matched systems with 410A refrigerant after January 1st, 2025. There are no guarantees or timelines on how long the existing equipment will remain available.
Update as of 6/4/26
The EPA is finalizing (4) major changes that affect the HVACR industry.
1. The installation deadline for 410a split systems is being repealed. This simply means that R-410A equipment that was manufactured or imported prior to January 1, 2025 can continue to be sold and installed.
2. Delay the GWP compliance date for Supermarket refrigeration. This allows for the use of refrigerant 449a/448a in existing equipment (see chart below).
3. Delay the GWP compliance date for commercial refrigeration applications (remote condensing units). This will allow for equipment to use refrigerants 449a / 448a (see chart below).
4. Delay the GWP compliance date for cold storage warehouse refrigeration. Based on the GWP compliance, this would allow for the use of the newer A2L’s and CO2 but not 449a / 448a (see chart below).
It is important to note that none of these changes will apply to NYS as part 494 regulations, which are more stringent, will take precedence.

While these changes provide additional flexibility for existing systems, there is some concern within the industry regarding their long-term impact on refrigerant supply. The AIM Act continues to phase down high-GWP refrigerants, reducing their availability over time. The delay introduced by the EPA rule may prolong reliance on these higher-GWP refrigerants, potentially straining an already limited supply needed to service existing systems.

New Era of Low GWP Refrigerants
The American Innovation & Manufacturing (AIM) Act directs the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to implement a phasedown of the production and consumption of HFCs by 2035. As part of this work, the EPA has published a rule that beginning January 1, 2026, the U.S. Federal Government will require Residential HVAC equipment to use refrigerants with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of less than 700.
A2L Defined
ASHRAE 34 defines refrigerant classification. The first digit refers to toxicity. A is lower toxicity, and B is higher toxicity. The numbers 1, 2L, 2, and 3 refer to flammability. The lower the number, the lower the flammability. 2L is the lowest flammability classification. Refrigerants with this classification are difficult to ignite and non-explosive.

Benefits of the Refrigerant Change
- Environmental Impact: A2L Refrigerants have a lower Global Warming Potential compared to traditional Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) such as R-410A. This means their potential to contribute to global warming is significantly lower if released into the atmosphere.
- Energy Efficiency: A2L Refrigerants often have better thermodynamic properties, which can lead to improved energy efficiency in cooling systems.

This involves adopting new safety protocols and ensuring proper training for handling these substances.
